Welcome to my violin studio! I'm so glad to hear that you've decided to explore the joys of learning the violin. Music training is a deeply enriching process that is fun and requires intention, patience and time. I look forward to being part of your musical journey.I come with 10 years of teaching experience supporting children, young people and adults at different stages of their violin learning journey through exams or simply for enjoyment.I hold a BMus in Music Studies (Performance) from the The Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the tutelage of the Head of Strings Prof Goetz Richter. My teaching methodologies are deeply indebted to my former teacher Lynette Lim - a well-known pedagogue who trained at Indiana University and the Eastman School of Music in the USA.

Teaching Philosophy

ENJOYMENT & MUSICALITY
It all starts by learning to develop a sense of enjoyment and love for music. We will learn how to play musically beyond the notes on the page
FOUNDATIONS
Strong basic foundational skills are the building blocks to music learning. My lessons focus on learning how to practice well through a range of focused creative thinking methods. I don't use one size fits all methods but instead prefer to cater to different learning styles
CONFIDENCE
My encouraging approach supports the development of confidence in performing. We will learn how to prepare for performances and learn ensemble skills
BODY AWARENESS
We develop an awareness of the dynamics in the body in order to facilitate healthy learning and practice habits for long term learning on the instrument

Adult Learners

Adult learners are very welcomed at my studio. I have taught students age 30 - 70. Perhaps you learned as a child and would like to pick it up again, or perhaps you've always loved the violin but never had the opportunity to until now. It is never too late to learn the violin.WHAT TO EXPECT:
Learning the violin is a long process, there are no shortcuts. Patience and commitment goes a long way.
At my studio, I understand that adults are juggling multiple priorities and this affects practice time and commitment. We will have conversations about what is most effective and what realistic outcomes look like.Your progress speed largely depends how much practice you can commit to weekly. However, it does not mean you cannot/should not learn the instrument if you can only commit a small amount every week. It just means that it will take you a bit longer.Developing foundational technique applies whether you'd like to play for fun, or to learn more seriously. The time spent in early foundational development is key to quicker progress down the road.If you're interested in learning the instrument, don't let age stop you :)

MYTHS:
I always get the question, am I too old to learn, is it too late?
Firstly, it is important to know that violin training is ongoing for as long as you're playing the instrument.Adults do not learn slower than children. In fact, because of the level of dexterity and cognitive ability, adults can pick up new musicianship concepts much quicker. The difference in speed of progress lies in "time" , "patience" and "practice".Younger kids with parental support often have time carved out daily and this supports their learning pace. For this same reason, my retired students learn quicker as well. For retirees, there are many alternative teaching methods that I can accommodate to suit physical adjustments if required. At my studio I will support you with a practice schedule that is realistic with your life and work commitments.

Young Learners

Kids age 6 and up are welcomed at my studio. My approach is both fun and gentle coupled with clarity in my instruction.WHAT TO EXPECT:
Learning the violin is a long-term process. There are no shortcuts. At my studio, I do not use a one size fits all approach when teaching kids. I draw from a range of focused teaching methods depending on your child's level of attention and engagement.
Your child's progress speed largely depends how consistent they are with weekly practice. I encourage parental/carer involvement for children under 10 years of age. Positive encouragement greatly supports their pace of learning and commitment to the instrument.Developing foundational technique applies whether they like to play for fun, or to learn more seriously. The time spent in early foundational development is key to quicker progress down the road.I look forward to supporting your child's music development!
